ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC22/Java SG ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC22/Java SG N 3-11 DATE: 1998-10-13 REPLACES: N/A DOC TYPE: Plain DOS Text TITLE: Addition for Coded Character Code Converters SOURCE: Japan (Yuki Mizutani) PROJECT: N/A STATUS: This document is circulated to National Bodies of JTC 1/SC22/Java SG for review and consideration at the October 1998 SC22/Java SG meeting in Tokyo. ACTION ID: FYI DUE DATE: DISTRIBUTION: P and L Members MEDIUM: DISKETTE NO.: NO. OF PAGES: 1 Text of contribution: ISO Java standard should provide a means to add coded character sets' converters outside of ISO Java specified. The additional converters should be utilized through the same interface (API) with the ISO Java specified sets of the converters. In order not to conflict platform or user defined converters, ISO Java standard should specify naming convention of those converters. Back ground of the requirements are as follows: The current Java does not provide functionality to add user/vendor defined coded character sets' converters. Therefore, there is no way for applets/applications to utilize the converters outside of mandatory set (See Japanese contribution JGN N3-9, Title: Mandatory Set of Character Sets' Converters).
